Brookdale Sleepy Hollow

About

Choosing a senior living community for yourself or your loved one is one of the most important decisions you will make. You are looking for that "partner" who is committed to making a positive difference in yours or your loved one's life. The Perfect Location Brookdale Sleepy Hollow is conveniently located in the peaceful Sleepy Hollow neighborhood of Amarillo, between SW 34th Avenue and W 45th Avenue, just down from Reid’s Coulter Gardens & Nursery. Our location is also near I-40 and I-27, which provides easy access to many amenities in the area, like Westgate Mall, Wal-Mart and Amarillo’s medical district. Amarillo’s Medical district includes Northwest Texas Healthcare System and BSA Health System – to name a few. Our community is in a great location to be able to provide a variety of outings for our residents. We can go bowling at Western Bowl. We can take a walk and see all the beautiful flowers at our local botanical gardens. We also can go to Meade Park, our favorite picnic spot. Sometimes we go to our favorite Mexican restaurant or grab ice cream at Braums. Every fall we make a special trip to the small Texas Panhandle town of Canadian to see the beautiful foliage. A Wonderful Selection Our small, close-knit community features 45 apartments and a family feel – perfect for the comfort and relaxation of your loved one! There are 27 studios, with three different sizes and styles. We can accommodate a variety of needs and budgets! All apartments include a kitchenette with refrigerator and cabinets, a large handicapped-accessible bathroom, wall-to-wall carpeting, individual temperature controls and large windows offering lovely views – some of our courtyard; others overlook Coulter Gardens. Residents are also provided emergency call pendants, which they can activate anytime they need assistance. Pets are also welcome. Additionally, our community offers several common areas for assisted living residents, including an activities room with a TV area, a large living room and dining room. Although we are a small single-level community, our building is spread out over a wide area and has three separate courtyards. All three offer mature landscaping and walking paths; one is enclosed for our memory care residents. In our Memory Care Neighborhood, our residents have the option of having their own studio, or they can share a “Friendship Suite,” a great option if the resident is not accustomed to living alone – or for families who wish to save on rent. A total of 18 apartments are available. In addition, residents have access to a comfortable kitchen area, where we often serve them lunch, as well as their own dining room. Strong, Caring Professional Relationships We partner closely with three different home health agencies, which come into our community typically three days a week, to provide physical, occupational and speech therapy. Residents and their families may choose to use one of these agencies – or we can refer them to others in the area; it’s always their choice. Either way, we can coordinate appointments for our residents. In addition, one of our home health agencies is able to help residents with diabetes, and should a resident require a higher level of skilled nursing services, we can bring in outside hospice care. Our Staff We have two dedicated groups of staff – one for our assisted living residents, and a second for residents with memory impairments. Many staff members have been with us for three-plus years. Not only are they dedicated to our residents, but they are also especially helpful to our families and go above and beyond to support them as needed. Our assisted living staff includes Resident Aids, who provide one-on-one assistance with daily care; Med Aids, who are available 24 hours a day to manage our residents’ medication needs; a full-time Activities Director, and a Wellness Coordinator. She works closely with a local physician who, along with a Physician’s Assistant, provides on-site care for the convenience of our residents. This is especially beneficial for those residents who are not from the Amarillo area and currently don’t have a doctor, as there are very few local physicians able to take on new Medicare patients. Our memory care staff includes our wonderful Memory Care Director, who has been with us for more than three years, as well as a dedicated staff of caregivers. They are truly special people – extremely patience and understanding. They work hard to overcome any obstacle that might stand in the way to providing the best care possible. For example, many memory care residents are very sensitive to water. So when they are getting them ready for a bath or shower, they might turn on a heat lamp in advance or use a special type of soap that the resident loves. In addition, our staff participates in extensive training, including ongoing Join Their Journey classes and in-services given by our director on such topics as validation and redirection techniques, safe bathing procedures and how to manage behaviors. Our state-of-the-art computerized assessment program allows us to accurately evaluate and monitor the unique combination of personal care services for each of our residents. You only pay for the services you are receiving. Brookdale Sleepy Hollow has partnered with many companies to help explore financial options for you and your loved one. (Elderlife, Life Care Funding, Veterans Programs, Local Real Estate Professionals, and Financial Planning Association) At Emeritus Senior Living we are committed to providing our current and new residents many programs and solutions to meet their individual needs. To support our commitment to you and your loved one, Brookdale offers a national program called Ethics First for employees, families, and residents to offer feedback or to report any issues anonymously in a safe and secure environment. What are the amenities? • Furnished apartments available upon request. • Three meals a day served restaurant style. • Daily activities and exercise programs. • Weekly outings to malls and restaurants. • Weekly housekeeping and laundry service. • Scheduled medical transportation. • Access to visiting doctors and in-house rehabilitation. Perhaps you would love to live here, but you're concerned about your budget. Or maybe you no longer want to live alone. Either way, we offer the perfect solution—Friendship Suites. Seniors are brought together to share a common apartment and to save on cost while receiving the same personalized attention, outstanding services and amenities that all residents enjoy. What are the benefits? • It promotes socialization opportunities, friendship and safety in a supportive environment. • It offers peace of mind knowing there is always someone close by. • From a cost perspective, someone participating in this program may save up to 30% in assisted living costs. • Friends can increase the longevity of a resident by offering coping mechanisms during difficult times and having a positive effect on mood and self-esteem. Assisted Living Services Our nurse visits prospective assisted living and memory care residents in their own environment to get a good sense of the individual’s abilities, needs and preferences. We then enter our initial assessment into our We Care state-of-the-art computerized evaluation program, with which we then create a personalized plan of care. The care plan specifies exactly what services the resident will need, so that he or she doesn’t receive or pay for extraneous services. In 30 days, we conduct a second evaluation, and in many cases, especially when a resident moves here from a rehabilitation hospital, their service needs decrease. We then conduct regular assessments every six months or sooner if their health condition changes. Overall, our goal is to not just meet residents’ expectations, but to exceed them. Because we are a small community, we know our residents and can easily identify when they do or don’t need extra assistance. Because this is their home – and we are their family – our residents feel comfortable letting us know if they need anything, and we’re honored to serve them. Alzheimer's and Dementia Care Services Everything in our Memory Care Neighborhood is centered around Join Their Journey®, an innovative approach to care that focuses on validating and honoring our residents’ life stories. Most of our residents are living back in their younger years. By understanding their past, we can build meaningful relationships with them. They aren’t just Alzheimer’s patients to us; we get to know them as the pharmacists, housewives, ranchers and the professors that they once were. If the individual always took a shower in the morning, we will make sure they can continue that routine. They can’t tell us what’s wrong; but their behaviors can easily signal a problem. That’s why we work closely with our families to learn what the resident’s life was like before they became ill. It’s our way into their world. Their activities are very different from our assisted living residents. It’s common to see residents setting tables, folding laundry, sweeping or doing any one of many “work” activities. Because in their minds they are at a time in life when they were busy with work or caring for children, they find it difficult to sit. Doing a productive activity gives them a sense of purpose and peace. Of course, we also provide many opportunities for fun and socializing. We take them on outings at least once a week – whether to get ice cream, look at Christmas lights, visit a local pumpkin patch in the fall, browse a jewelry shop in town, eat out or to attend the symphony – they’re always game!
